BIFMA X5.1 Chair Testing Equipment Catalogue
Do chairs have "health check reports" too? This furniture chair test product catalogue contains the industry's strict standards!
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017(R2022) is the current voluntary safety and performance testing standard for general office chairs in the United States. It was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and released by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA).
Scope of application
Executive chairs, task chairs, employee chairs, visitor chairs, stackable chairs, chairs with writing boards, stools。
Test project
The standard classifies chairs into three categories (tiltable, fixed back with tiltable seat angle, fixed back), and specifies the key tests:
Stability (forward / backward / side rollover)
Static strength (seat, back, armrests, five-star feet, chair legs)
Durability under cyclic loading (core)
Seat cushion impact: 100,000 times
Backrest durability: 120,000 times
Tilting mechanism: 300,000 times
Wheel/stand: 100,000 times of reciprocation
Armrest strength, front corner fatigue, overall structural durability, limit strength, etc.
Technical feature
- Load has been comprehensively upgraded (key changes in 2017 edition)
- From the old version of 253 pounds → 275 pounds (125 kg), adapted to the increase in the average weight of Americans
- Two levels of load:
Functional Load: Normal usage intensity, cannot fail
Proof Load: Extreme overload, cannot suddenly break (allows functional failure) - Testing system: Comprehensive, quantitative, and repeatable
5 categories 24 items: Static strength, dynamic impact, cyclic durability, stability, structural function
High cycle count: Lateral tilting mechanism 300,000 times, backrest/rotation 120,000 times, seat impact 100,000 times - Type-specific testing:
Type I: Fully tiltable (the strictest)
Type II: Backrest fixed, seat tiltable
Type III: Fixed back (visitor chair)
